President Washington was the first president of the United States, he served two terms (From 1789-1796). President washington gave his first speech/proclamation in 1789. President Washington have his last speech in 1796. While two speeches he gave these are similar, they also bestow some controversy among each other.

The first contrasual evidence that you can infer from both speeches is his purpose. The main purpose behind President Washington’s speech in the thanksgiving proclamation is to thank god for the wellbeing of the state. One example of this is when he said, “…to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor…” (Washington 132). That quote is meant to gives thanks to god directly. This is has a vastly different purpose when compared to President Washington’s farewell speech.

In President Washington’s farewell speech, he talks about unfaction and how it will ensure the nations heath for decades to come. He doesn’t every really give much praise to god in his Farewell address. For example: “The unity of government which constitutes you one people is also now dear to you. It is justly so, for it is a main pillar in the edifice of your real independence, the support of your tranquility at home, your peace abroad; of your safety; of your prosperity; of that very liberty which you so highly prize.” (Washington 136). This quote represents his ideology on why unification is extremely important. While his purpose for the two speeches may be different, his tone and style of speech are very much similar. In President Washington’s farewell address he states, “In offering to you, my countrymen…” (Washington 139).

He also has a very informal pattern of tongue in his farewell address. This shows that he viewed his citizens as his everyday friends family toward the end of his 2nd term presidency.. While this information may seem unnecessary, it allows to “Be in the mind of Washington”. You can inform from both speech that at the beginning of his presidency he was very formal and talked less about unification. However, when looking toward the end of his presidency he was informal and had enormous sentences dedicated to the importance of unification. In conclusion, President Washington’s farewell address and Thanksgiving proclamation have similarities but not without their controversy.
