"The Cask of Amontillado": Characterization of Montresor

The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe, the dark side of human nature is illustrated by the character of Montresor and his victim Fortunato.

Montresor is a manipulator and avenger. These qualities led to the death of Fortunato, a man who hurt him. Through the actions, words and thoughts of the character, we can see how he is carrying out his revenge plan. at random or at least make it appear. The background is cheerful and cheerful at the carnival.Then he moved to the catacombs of the house of Montresor. It is a place of misfortune where history is. Montresor’s clothes seem to indicate his desire to hide to carry out his sober plan. On the other side of the spectrum, Fortunato wears a ‘tight dress with partial stripes and her head is dominated by the hat and conical bells’ (76). Your clothes seem to indicate your safe but stupid way. The clothes of the two characters seem to be in the mood for the kind of characters they were. However, Montresor’s true character is evident in his words. His vindictive attitude set the tone for the following actions from the beginning. One of the first things Montresor tells the reader about Fortunato is that ‘… not only must he be punished, but he must also be punished without punishment’ (75). Montresor also manipulates by telling Fortunato that Italy will take place during a carnival when the skeletons of Montresor and Fortunato reach the wet walls covered with saltpeter. Montresor wears a ‘black silk mask’ and a thick layer on his knees (76-77, he will try the Amonillado because he knows that Fortunato feels compelled to taste the wine himself.’While you’re engaged, I’m on my way to Luchresi. If anyone has a critical turn, it’s him. He will tell me …’ (76). Not only is it manipulative and revenge, but it also shows condescending qualities. Montresor speaks with Fortunato in the catacombs and says: ‘Your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, loved; you are as happy as before. You are a man who must be missed’ (77) He also has a vengeful and manipulative character . Attracts Fortunato to the catacombs of his house to carry out his plans. First, he responds to Fortunato’s ego that someone else is as good a wine judge as he is (76). Then Montresor Fortunato pretends that there is an expensive bottle of wine at the bottom of his catacombs, and when they finally reach their destination, Montresor chains him to the wall, builds a tomb with bricks around him and lets him die there. It is said that he wounded Fortunato Montresor on several occasions: ‘The thousand wounds of Fortunato that I used best, but when I accepted the insult, I swore to take revenge’ (75). ‘However, common insults or acts have been mentioned in history. It was the exact opposite; Fortunato was friendly and helpful in Montresor. At the beginning of the story, we can obviously see that Montresor believes he was injured by Fortunato. His revenge plan is easily visible through his actions and thoughts. ‘He had a weak point, he was lucky, even if in other respects he was a man to be respected and even feared’ (76). This line shows that the Montreal plan is well thought out. There is nothing to suggest what Fortunato thinks of Montresor. We can only assume that he trusts him because he follows him in the catacombs and until the last moment before laying the last brick, he always has the idea that Montresor is making fun of him. Really an excellent joke ”(80). Montresor succeeds in his revenge plan. He managed to get Fortunato into the catacombs and quickly put it on the wall. Throwing the chain around it was easy in seconds (79).Then, step by step, Montresor built the Fortunato brick tomb around him. When Montresor called him, he heard nothing and, therefore, his plan was complete. ‘To the rhythm of Requiescat!’ (80).

The final results certainly show the success of the Montresor plan. Throughout history, it has been seen how Montresor completely manipulated Fortunato and led to his downfall. His vindictive nature made it impossible for him to reconsider the bad action he had just done. His only concern was to avenge the insults he perceived. He managed to take someone’s life without revealing his dark side to anyone.
