Biblical Worldview and Technology

When I first started this course, it was unclear to me what my biblical worldview of computer technology was. I did not fully understand the question that was being asked. My understanding was if technology was a good or bad thing. I never looked at it through a Christian perspective. Technology today is used in so many things from refrigerators to coffee pots and cars to medical equipment. My view has grown since beginning this course. Although technology to me before seemed relevant, it was more important to note that there are many different ways to utilize this tool to advance and do great things.

The Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.” (Genesis 11:6 NKJV). Technology has advanced to the point churches are broadcasting services through television and podcasts for viewers who are unable to attend services due to disabilities or illnesses. I believe God created the invention of technology and gave to specific people for the creation of it to share His word to the world quickly. On the contrary to technology has been created for good, but I also believe Satan has taken the same creation of technology to put in the hands of non-Christian people. There are a lot of sites on the internet where you can see and learn things that are not very Christian (porn, hacking, weapons to kill, and mass destruction, etc.).

Throughout this course there has been a lot of interaction with articles and students in discussions what our worldviews consisted of. Everyone has a different opinion and different approach to biblical worldview of technology. We as humans have our own beliefs, some environmental and cultural beliefs. It has a lot to do with our upbringing and the way we were raised. In John 8:31-32, Jesus stated “to those Jews who believed in Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32 NKJV). Christian disciples utilizing those tools, technology of all sorts, will use the endeavors to further impress in their missions.

Christopher Blevins notes that technology used in a general sense is applied to the general areas in which mankind made various tools for different purposes. It all makes sense in a biblical worldview when used for the right purposes. I stand behind my beliefs. It is worth nothing that no technology is perfect, according to Blevins. Technology would not exist if it were not for man, therefore it is imperfect, just like a human being. The raise for concern really stems from the people that use it and use technology in a dangerous manner. When using technology to harm, threaten, or endanger someone, that is where the raise for concern steps in. There is always concern associated with things we cannot control. Blevins also notes that our human imperfections limit us by saying, “Being error prone or limited does not in and of itself mean that it should not be used.” Understanding that technology in itself isn’t evil or sinful but it is attached to the actions of a sinful person.

The reason I chose https://classroomclipart.com first was because of the free graphics and clipart I could use to make a presentation for PowerPoint or print out clip art and put on my Sunday school classroom walls. The second website I found helpful was https://coolarchive.com, even though the resources with most of these sites are similar. Coolarchive.com graphics are more in depth. The third website I found useful was https://pixabay.com, as it was also used in PowerPoint presentations. The fourth website I found helpful was https://kissclipart.com, although it does not have as much selection, in my opinion, as the other three above. It was still great graphics to be used in presentations, as well. The great thing about these websites is all the animations, clipart, and graphics are all free of copyright laws. Which makes for less stress when using the animations, clipart, and graphics section.

After this class the past five weeks, I believe I have gained a new perspective and outlook on Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. One of the features I used and played around with in Word was the design feature. You can easily make a plain paper very nice and very appealing to the eyes with this feature. In Microsoft Excel, I learned how to properly structure a yearly budget workbook. I learned the SUM feature and how to add and/or subtract entire rows and columns, but you must make sure to use the correct formulas. For PowerPoint, I learned how to add pictures and videos along with word. I also learned how to make a very beautiful PowerPoint presentation.

I have learned so much more about what Microsoft has to offer. I look forward to using all of the knowledge I have gained from this class in my future endeavors. After all the reading and discussions and studying in this class that past five weeks, I still firmly believe God gave us the knowledge for technology. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you future and hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV). I do believe that somewhere in the Bible, God mentions about technology and the future of it. Technology makes everyday life, in general, easier. So, in the end I believe technology is good, but it all determines the user for what he/she decides to use it for whether it be good or evil.
