Many people think of Andrew Jackson as a savior of our country, but that is far from the truth. The truth is that he is a racist, hot tempered controlling, selfish. . . (I could go on forever) person. This made him a terrible president. Andrew Jackson is not one that should be remembered as a hero, in fact just the opposite.
Jackson was a very cruel slave owner, and sometimes went as far as killing slaves as examples to the others. “In all reality, slavery was the source of Andrew Jackson’s wealth.”He owned a giant plantation called the Hermitage. The Hermitage is a 1,000 acre cotton plantation that Andrew Jackson owned. He owned about 15,000 slaves just on the plantation. And they were the only workers. They did all of his work, because that’s what he (and most people back then) thought that that is what they were meant to do.
He was also very unfair to slaves. For instance, He burned many Seminole villages, that eventually lead to the first Seminole war. He move 100,000 Native Americans out of their homes, including 15,000 Cherokees. 4,000 Cherokees died. Eventually every one of the Native Americans were moved. While the Natives were gone the soldiers looted their houses, and took all the stuff that they left behind. The Trail of Tears, as it is now known as, is a 1,000 mile trek, in which many Natives Died. “It will be my sincere and constant desire to observe toward the Indian tribes within our limits a just and liberal policy, and to give that humane and considerate attention to their rights and their wants which is consistent with the habits of our Government and the feelings of our people.”-Andrew Jackson.
Andrew may have helped us a few times. For instance, he helped make a more democratic government. He also prevented a civil war. He even helped the army, though in doing so, he killed many british soldiers for no apparent reason. He was also against the bank of america, and the rich and well-born; he supported and depended on support from the common people. “It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their own selfish purpose.”-Andrew Jackson. He also made america more democratic.
These are only a few reasons why Andrew Jackson is not a hero. He has done too much bad to even out the few good things he’s done. Though many people think he’s a hero, I believe he is more of a villain.
