The Mishandling of the COVID-19 Pandemic by President Donald Trump

We all have many thoughts on the President of the United States, but I think many people can agree Donald Trump has not handled this situation well. Although the first case in the United States was not reported until January 2020 and not declared a national pandemic until March, the U.S. has the most cases worldwide. Our nurses are tired, personal protection gear is rarely available to medical personnel, and hope is running thin. Donald Trump had a lack of preparation, he discarded many warnings, and he is opening states back up at a rapid speed.

On March 6th, 2020, there were confirmed cases in 26 states. While these cases were rising, Donald Trump was out partying, golfing, and attending fundraisers. Trump spent the week before the virus was announced as a national pandemic funding 8 million dollars to different companies. Donald Trump stated that the virus had come out of nowhere when the virus was first announced by China 3 months in advance. The number of cases had doubled within three days of announcing the pandemic.

Donald Trump denied many warnings about how bad COVID-19 was. On January 30th, Trump stated in a news conference that it was a recommendation to go on lockdown, and it did not matter. Navarro had formally warned Trump that the virus could cost millions of dollars and put millions at risk, but Trump continued to discard it. The first known case of COVID-19 in the United States was on January 20th, 2020, and country actions were not taken until March 16th, 2020.

Lastly, Trump wants to send everybody back to normal on May 1st, 2020, ignoring the effort to stop increased curbs on the coronavirus. Most people compare this virus to the flu, which would make it seem not as bad, but in the beginning, the influenza virus killed at least 500 million people from 1918 to 1919. Also, As of April 22nd, 2020, there are two active cases in pets. Trump is demanding the United States be opened up, although there are still many active cases, and the death rate is going up. Although people may be losing symptoms, it does not mean they are virus-free. This means that more people will go out and infect other people, and we will be right back to where we started.

Although Trump may be good in other situations, a national pandemic is not one. Donald Trump is more focused on the economy rather than the health of his citizens. Between the lack of preparation, the late notice to the people, the discarded warnings, and many other factors, Donald Trump is not only putting his staff, himself, and the country at risk.
