Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, full name Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, was an Austrian composer in the classical era. He was born on January 27, 1756, in Salzburg, Austria and is widely regarded as one of the most influential composers of his time. He sadly only lived 35 years and died on December 5, 1791. Mozart composed his first piece of music at the age of five and started playing short pieces when he was 4. He was already considered to be a genius as a child. His father was his first teacher and took him to Munich to play at the Bavarian court. Shortly afterwards they went to Vienna and were heard at the imperial court and in noble houses. In 1763 he left his position as deputy Kapellmeister at the prince-archbishop’s court in Salzburg and decided to go on tour. He traveled to Augsburg, Mannheim, Amsterdam Stuttgart, Mainz, Munich, Brussels, Frankfurt, Lyon and Switzerland. He spent the winter in Paris, where he published his first musical piece, and 1 year in London, where he met Johann Christian Bach and composed his first symphonies— K16, K19 and K19a. During this time, he was barely 8 years old. He returned home to Salzburg in late 1766.
Mozart’s most popular composition is “The Marriage of Figaro.” It is an opera buffa in 4 acts with an Italian libretto. It premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on May 1, 1786. It’s conceivably a standout amongst the most moving and celebrated opera overtures ever. It is even still played alone as a show piece the world over. Truth be told, The Marriage of Figaro is viewed as one of the top ten greatest performed operas around the world. Some other common pieces he wrote include, ‘Eine Kleine Nacht-Musik’ and “Molto Allegro.” The more popular one is Eine Kleine Nacht-Musik, which translates to “a little serenade.” This composition is something that we’ve all heard at one point or another. The work is written for an ensemble of two violins, viola, and a cello with string orchestras. It may also be one of the most well-known pieces of classical music ever written. Mozart’s work extended to all types and styles of music. He was very good at blending traditional and contemporary elements to create his own unique style. People would describe it as “thematic and tonal variety melded with a high degree of formal discipline.” He’s known for compositions with melodic, rhythmic and dynamic contrasts.
Mozart had a strong influence on Ludwig van Beethoven’s work and even gave him some lessons. His impact was so powerful that Beethoven copied a passage from Mozart’s 40th Symphony into the sketchbook he was utilizing when he wrote his Fifth Symphony. Many believe that the third movement opens with a theme comparable to one from Mozart. Charles Rosen sees Mozart’s C Minor Piano Concerto, K. 491, as a model for Beethoven’s third Piano Concerto in a similar key, the Quintet for Piano and Winds, K. 452, for Beethoven’s quintet for the same instruments, Op. 16, and the A major String Quartet, K. 464, for Beethoven’s A major String Quartet Op. 18 No. 5.
