The Future Generation Should Be Educated about the Dangers of Plastic Pollution in Ocean

The world is in danger. If the future generation is not properly educated about the pollution of plastic in the oceans, the earth as we know it may become one with a greater extinction count, an extremely polluted atmosphere, and ground covered in plastic garbage. By introducing plastic into the ocean, we are introducing the chemicals in that plastic into the human bodies. By providing the future generation with the knowledge of what pollution causes, this can help the world find a way to decrease the pollution that already exists, as well. Plastic one of the most common pollutants in the world, and that is a fact that can possibly be changed by educating children on the impact that pollution in the form of plastic products has on the environment. Students should be educated on the impacts of the pollution from plastic products in the oceans because the future is at stake if the upcoming generation does not act upon this crisis.

If we don’t teach the future generation about the impact their pollution will have, many species will become extinct. Putting plastic garbage into the ocean is basically feeding this garbage to the animals that inhabit these oceans. Because they believe it to be food, fish and other organisms eat the trash that gets thrown into the ocean. These plastic products may contain harmful chemicals that the animals would digest. These chemicals could kill or seriously injure any animal that consumes them. Experts suggest that this wandering plastic garbage is more of a threat to animal extinction than climate change, however this theory does need to be more thoroughly tested, Millions of sea creatures are killed every year from plastic garbage in the ocean.

The theory that the chemicals are killing ocean organisms also leads to the theory that these chemicals may exist inside of human beings today. After ingesting fish or any other organisms that have consumed this plastic (thus consuming the chemicals in the plastic as well) those chemicals transfer into the human body. While, of couse, these chemicals aren’t killing humans in the masses, it can be harmful to the human body in ways that are invisible at the moment. Tuna, salmon, and other fish that humans eat are endangered from their bait ingesting plastic litter, thus endangering humans as well.

A huge way to cut down on ocean pollution is by teaching the future generation how to prevent this in the future as well as get rid of the damage done in the past. Plastic itself is extremely difficult to recycle. No one has been able to come up with a way to recycle plastic in the seas. There has been one conclusion – the only way to prevent plastic garbage from piling up in the ocean is to prevent plastic garbage from getting in the ocean in the first place. Many floats, nets, and tubes used in fishing and such get lost in storms and float away to sea, endangering the ocean creatures that live there.

Scientists tested the theory that more animals are killed by plastic garbage than climate change by taking liver and blood samples from fish. They looked for chemicals from plastics in these fish that would cause protein and hormone deformities. This has reduced the flow of plastic garbage to rivers connecting to the ocean. Nearly 100 towns in California have laws against throwaway plastic bags.

A study in 2010 suggests that about 2.3 billion pieces of plastic have gone into Southern California’s coastal waters in three days. Since 2009, there has been a great increase in plastic garbage piled up in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch that is a major garbage patch that drifts into the ocean. All over the world, plastic waste is piling up and contaminating the earth. Plastic particles that combine with other plastic debris gather in small places are classified as gyres, and these take up about 40 percent of ocean surface and about 25 percent of the Earth.
