Animal Legal Defense Fund

The english author Michael Morpurgo said “Animals are sentient, intelligent, perceptive, funny and entertaining. We owe them a duty of care as we do to children.” So why hesitate on protecting the animals from suffer, I believe we should pass the Animal Bill of Rights, because if animals are being punish by humans; beings who have no right or power over them, then there should be a legal document or law that states that animals should have benefits an/or rights that protects them from humans, and make us committed to protect them. Throughout the past years the concern of animal protection has become more noticeable in modern society. More people are starting to get involved in the movement of improving the welfare of animals.

Nowadays people have even take action on this issue and they have signed the animal bill of rights, the Animal Bill of Rights is a law that was issue by an organization called the Animal Legal Defense Fund, and guarantees basic legal rights for animals, by doing this, people are proving to the representatives that they care about the wellness of animals. This action encourages representatives to advocate for the rights of animals and promote the benefits and advantages that will bring to us if we start taking care of them. In the article “A Change of Heart about Animals” by Jeremy Rifkin, we can encounter different examples in which animals just like humans are intelligent beings, who are capable of comprehending what is better and what is worst, and even know how to solve a problem. One of the most amazing examples is where scientists are studying birds behavior; “two birds named Betty and Abel were given a choice between using two tools, one straight wire, the other a hooked wire, to snag a piece of meat from inside a tube.

Both chose the hooked wire, Abel the more dominant male, then stole Betty’s hook, leaving her with only straight wire”(Rifkin 7), this example provides us a clear view and a credible proof that in the animal kingdom, there is also overpowered by the male over the female. It looks like animals just like some humans have the same idea that females should be treated as the weaker sex. This example supports the last bill of rights that states that the animals should have the right to have their interests presented to the court and protected by the law of the land, because it demonstrates that the animals have interests and preferences, according to the right this should be protected and presented. In the same article it is also mentioned that, “the government is encouraging pig farmers to give 20 seconds of human contact each day and to provide them with toys to prevent them from fighting”(Rifkin 5). But why is the government making farmers give animals 20 minutes of contact with human, well the answer is that pigs just like humans are needed of attention, and farmers should provide care to pigs, the same as a dad does to his son. In the same way, if we are willing to provide our kids welfare, so they can bring benefits to us; we should have the same thinking when raising an animal.

This evidence is really supportive to the right of farm animals to an environment that satisfies their basic physical and psychological needs, because it talks about what are the needs that pigs and probably all animals have. The article “Hooked on a Myth” was published in October 8, 2006 by the L.A. times, and this article provides a big variety of evidence that proves how we are very similar to our fellow creatures. And the most interesting statement is the one that the author conveys in paragraph 11, he says ¨ It turns out that the stereotype of fish as slow-dim witted creatures is wrong; many fish are remarkably clever. For example, they can learn geometrical relationships and landmarks-and then use these to generate a mental map to plan escape routes if a predator shows up.¨ The author of this article has identify the fact that fishes are not stupid, and they are capable of thinking cleverly to solve a daily problem in their lives. An example that can prove that this make us similar to fishes is when we want to go somewhere we always use tools, like google maps to find routes to save us a lot of time, and get to our destinations quicker and safer, avoiding the traffic.

This evidence supports the right of wildlife to a natural habitat, ecologically sufficient to a normal existence and self-sustaining species population, because it tells us that fishes are capable of thinking critically which makes them self-sustaining therefore, we can affirm that they are capable of handling their life on their own and solving their problems. And I suggest that the law should be pass so nothing can alter their life in any way. All things considered, I agree on passing the Animal Bill of Rights, because, just think about it, in what way does this change will affect us negatively? How does giving animals rights will hurt us? This change will even help us become a more healthy and peaceful society, and a powerful moral. And if the bill of rights is not successfully approved, I think that the main change should be done in our hearts, we should not be in need of a law to do what is right. The animals deserve being treated with respect and love.
