An Example of Social Inequality in to Kill a Mockingbird

The book To Kill A Mocking Bird is about a young girl called scout who lives with her brother Jim and her father Atticus. One summer a boy named Dill comes into their lives who they would spend the summer with. During this time, they became interested in seeing Mr. Arthur aka Boo. When Atticus who is a lawyer was given the task of defending Tom Robinson it changed the life of everyone in their house. As for Tom Robinson was a nigger wrongfully accused of rape by the Ewells. Since rape was a high crime in Alabama during the 1930’s most of the folk in the small-town disliked Atticus for defending Tom.

When school came around some kids were telling Scout her father was a nigger-lover which caused her to get into a fight. Atticus sister came to live with them for a while, so she could try to make Scout more lady-like. However, all she did was anger Scout and Jim. When Tom Robinsons court day came it was a lengthy case that he ended up losing. Tom was later shot to death when he tried to climb the fence and escape the jail. Robert Ewell who threatened Atticus fulfilled his promise. After a Halloween party and Scout and Jim were on their way home in the dark Robert attacked them with a kitchen knife but failed since Boo intervened which cause Robert to trip over a tree root and fall onto his knife. To Kill A Mocking Bird Show that people may be different than what was believed about them.

In To Kill A Mocking Bird Atticus plays an important role as he is the father of Scout. He also told Scout many things that helped her stay out of fights. Such as when she got in a fight with a kid because they said her dad was a nigger lover he told her that ‘It’s never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn’t hurt you.’ If Atticus wasn’t around, then Scout life would have been very different as for she would have kept getting into fights which would have gotten her in trouble. Therefore, Atticus taught Scout many important life lessons.

In To Kill A Mocking Bird Atticus also played an important role as he expressed the fact that Boo had his reasons for staying inside. Such as when he said ‘You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…. Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.’ This means that although you might not see the reason someone does something they may have good reasons for doing it. Which kept Scout from fearing everything Boo related. Therefore, Atticus expressed some important things that affected everyone lives.

Not only was Atticus an important part of everyone lives, he defends a nigger and changes people’s opinion about them. He does this by saying “Which, gentlemen, we know is a lie as black as Tom Robinson’s skin, a lie I do not have to point out to you. You know the truth, and the truth is this: some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral, some Negro men are not to be trusted around women—black or white. But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men.” This affected everyone since they started realizing that your race doesn’t defy you. This meant that Tom had a chance of being free either way. Do to this Atticus has a huge effect of everyone in the community.

The setting played an important role in To KiIl A Mocking Bird, this is because the time and place had different views than people in our time. Harper Lee makes use of this by expressing the laws and views of people. Such as how rape was a high offence in Alabama at the time. And how niggers were despised on and thought to be liars. The views of people also affected their language. This was since white people were disrespecting niggers. Such as asking for help in disrespectful ways or calling them boy instead of man. Besides what was thought of niggas the setting was in a small town where everyone knew each other. This allowed for word to spread quickly whenever something new appeared. Such as when people called Scouts father a nigger-lover and she didn’t fight back word got out that she wasn’t fighting anymore. The Radleys house was also in between her house and the school which allowed for Boo to leave her and Jem presents. The setting played an important role as if it was somewhere else then most of the character actions would’ve been different.

The conflict in To Kill A Mocking Bird would be Tom Robinsons case, which would be a man vs. society case. The conflict was important because it opened Scouts, Jems, and Dills views of the cruelty toward people of a different color. It also showed them how other people, no matter their welfare had discriminative views and treated niggas badly. (The way Mayella talked about Tom, or the way her father chose to blame someone because he knew that his color wasn’t favored.) It shows that even though a nigga could be innocent white people believe white people over them.

To finish this up, To Kill A Mocking Bird was about a young girl living in a time of discrimination. Her family goes through many troubles especially when her father takes on a case to defend a nigga that was accused of rape. I didn’t learn much through this book, except for the fact that not everyone was cruel. And some kids that were raised right held views of equality.
