Malala Yousafzai Speech Analysis Essay

In Malala’s speech to the United Nations youth assembly, she does emphasize the value that education has. The speech is about a girl, 16 years old that gives her encounter about being shot by the Taliban in her head and surviving the ordeal. Malala is now a human rights activist advocating for the rights of children of both genders affected in the war-torn countries. Malala stresses the importance of education in her words, “Let us pick up our books and our pens. They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world.” The statement brings out Malala’s strong conviction that education is a powerful possession such that if it is imparted to every one of the children, they will be empowered to perform great actions in their lives.

The statement emphasizes the importance of education in the community. Malala takes the books and pens to be the most powerful weapons. A book or a pen can only be picked by an individual that has gone to school and had the values of education imparted to him or her. On the other hand, a gun happens to be an object that can be picked by any individual whether the individual is one who has gone to school or not.

Malala also does ensure that she is vocal in opposing of the law that is set up banning the females from getting an opportunity to go to school. Her parents offer her the support that she needs making her be very much vocal on the issue.

The determination in her together with the unwavering support from the parents makes her strive to make the mission she has to succeed. Her advocacy is what forces the Taliban to eventually shoot her in the head on a particular day while she was at school. Luckily, with the improved technology and the doctors offering their best, they get to ensure that Malala’s life gets saved. The unwavering determination that Malala has for quality education for all is what many people do admire in her.

Malala does prove that education being the most powerful weapon that an individual can possess and that one should go at any lengths to ensure that they achieve being educated despite facing life-threatening challenges. Malala does face a great challenge from the Taliban, but she still does ferociously advocate for equal opportunity education for all (Yousafzai, 2013).

A student or a teacher that has been able to get to school knows the effects that war brings about in the society. Such an individual who knows the effects of war will not advocate for the occurrence of war in society.

The campaign by Malala has the effect of emphasizing the importance of education to the current global community. The campaign is one that makes the various strategic people in leadership positions to be obliged to promote education for the people that they are leading. Malala gives the argument that guns are not that important as compared to those who are equipped with pens and books. Those with books, she argues they have better weapons than those with guns given the fact that guns can be held by anybody whether educated or not. The books and pens, on the contrary, can only be given to those who can read and write. Her campaign does, therefore, stress on the fact that the global community needs to have recommendations in place that will help to ensure that the people are educated. Educating the people will also help the global community in making positive strides in matters about development.

In my opinion, the state of female education has tremendously improved over the recent years but has not yet achieved its full potential. Getting an education for the girls do go beyond only getting them into schools. Educating of the girl-child requires ensuring that the girls can feel safe as well while studying. Globally, not all the countries have been able to achieve this step in educating of the girl-child. The illiteracy levels of the females are also still higher than the illiteracy levels of the males. This can be attributed to the fact that it is the older women who happen to less likely have attended school when compared to the recent younger ladies who have attended schools due to the policies set in place to ensure that the ladies are well educated.

The successes in the education of women can be attributed to a variety of factors. The factors include the setting up of girls’ community schools to help educate the less fortunate ladies. Another factor is the several organizations that offer scholarships for bright, young girls who may be unable to continue their education due to poverty. The success may also be attributed to the elimination of school fees for disadvantaged girls by certain governments. The elimination of school fees enables all the ladies to attend school and get the best out of the schools (Stromquist, and Monkman, 2014).

Some girls, however, may not be able to finish school due to various factors that may arise in the course of their education especially in the developing countries. One such factor is early marriage. In some developing countries, some people still do practice early marriage for the females. Marrying them off at an early age brings them some responsibilities, and they thus are forced to cut off their education resulting in the gender gap widening at the top. To have the gender gap bridged, it is essential that the government, especially in the developing countries, follow up on the education of the ladies until they get to their maximum level of education (Wolpe, 2013).

The female education status, on a global perspective, has thus improved tremendously compared to times in the past. The governments, however, should ensure that they enforce policies that will help the girls to stay in school up to a point they complete their education.
