Discrimination in of Mice and Men Essay

Nelson Mandela said “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” This quote means that discrimination leaves people without power or hope. In the novel of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck tells the story of two men who travel together during the Great Depression. Steinbeck explores the major theme of the loss of hope that can be caused by discrimination. Steinbeck used the characters Crooks and Lennie to show that discrimination leaves people without power or hope.

In the novel, Steinbeck used Crooks to show discrimination. In chapter five Crook is being discriminated by Curley’s Wife and he feels like his nothing because he’s black. “Well, you keep your place then, nigger. I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain’t even funny.” This is not the only discrimination against Crooks. She turned on him in scorn. “Listen, nigger,” she said. “You know what I can do to you if open your trap?” This quote means to me that if Curley’s Wife she screams or said some that Crooks did he would get kill the white people clouds if you were black back than you would get blame of everything because you are black you would even get kill and you and you didn’t do nothing. With all this quote means that discrimination leaves people without power or hope.

another character that steinbeck uses to highlight the theme discrimination is curley’s wife. Nobody wants to talk to her cause she is curley’s wife and curley tells all the people not to talk to her. “ I get lonely,”she said. “You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley. How’d you like not to talk to anybody?” This show that she is being talked about around town.

She is being discriminated by Curley telling her what to do and what not to do and Curley tell that people to do not talk to her so she feels lonely like she doesn’t have nobody. Another reason why that curley’s wife is being discrimination is when she said I don’t like Curley. He ain’t a nice fella.” So what this quote means to me is that she acting that she like him but she doesn’t like him she gets married him for his money so she can not soffer so she can have a better life.

Another part that she is being discriminated is when she said I tell you aint used to livin’ like this. I coulda made something’ of myself” This quote means to me is that if she would go with the actors she would have a better life and she would have to married curley. What all this means is that if there was no discrimination the would be a better place and evey would would be best friends and have a better life.
