Novel 1984 by George Orwell

In the novel 1984 by George Orwell mostly focuses on the protagonist Winston Smith. The novel takes place in the future in a modern dystopia written in 1949 on Orwell’s judgment on Stalin and Hitler who he views are alike to one another. The agonist of the novel is a Totalitarian authority known as the party. The leader of the party goes by the name of “Big Brother” that stands for the police keeping tabs on you.

The novel begins with Winston writing in his ilegal diary out of sight from the camera in his room. Winston is a normal government worker and has a coworker whom he has a crush on named Julia, as well as a rigorous dystopian government that is watching him and everyone else under constant watch 24/7 of the transcendent Big Brother. Winston is an employee at the Ministry of truth, the government agency is in charge of providing the truth to the citizens But of course, the truth is near accurate to the renowned party. So instead of the citizens relying on the facts of reality they depend on the party to tell them what is going on in the world. The citizens rely on the party to get their daily news so they can get up to date with what is going on in the world. They are in full control of what is actually going on in the world and what they want them to think about what is going on in the real world. The party benefits from this making the citizens think that 2+2 = 5 all day long.

We can relate to this in modern day because with our smart phones it lessens our privacy because anything type on the Internet is being tracked by the government as well as anything that you say is too. I feel smartphones are a little too smart because I do not want the government knowing my every move I do online and selling my information to third-party companies so later I can see them as ads. For an example like the movie Snowden when he saw that the government was tracking people’s personal information with terrorism and with anything they found interesting. Winston and Snowden are somewhat similar in a couple ways because Winston is Fed up with big brother and with the party being in control of everything and wants to overthrow him. Along with Snowden he wants to know that the government is tracking people’s every move they both want the citizens to know what’s actually going on in the world.

Nowadays in modern society our phones have become very essential to us. We rely on them for our daily use. Our phones have become such a problem today that more people are being less creative in how they think and use their phones for bad rather good. For example students nowadays don’t read as much as they did before because there’s websites like Shmoop and SparkNotes. These websites make the students want to read less because they say to themselves what’s the point of reading if we can get the answer online but, they are not developing their learning skills as well as their vocabulary skills learning new words and such. We can relate this to 1984 with newspeak because it limited the citizens to have free of thought and free of speech. It makes the citizens less creative and not want to question the government authority.
